New Iranian President Reaches Out to China, Russia; Warns US

Not unexpectedly, Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian penned his “Message to the New World,” published in the Tehran Times on July 13, to shore up his nation’s alliances and denigrate the United States and Israel. Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon who has been tagged a “moderate” by international media, used his media missive to praise and promise to expand cooperation with his neighbor Russia, who, like China, was praised for “having stood by us during challenging times.”

The president-elect warned the United States that Iran does not “respond to pressure” and declared that the Iranian defense doctrine does not include nuclear weapons. He reached out to Europe to overcome tensions from Tehran’s belief that the European nations failed to deliver the end-run around losses suffered when the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Pezehkian was elected in a special election to fill the presidency when his predecessor died in a plane crash. Although viewed as a “reformer,” he is at the whim of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Ruler, who must approve all significant policies.
