Pakistani Spokesman Hints at Saudi-Iranian Mediation by Khan

A spokesman for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry says it’s likely that Prime Minister Imran Khan will travel to Saudi Arabia and Iran, sparking speculation that the Pakistani leader would mediate an end to tensions between the two sides. “The possibility of a visit of the prime minister to Saudi Arabia and Iran is in the cards, and I will update you as things unfold,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal told reporters on Thursday during a briefing in the capital Islamabad. Khan said the idea of him bringing the two sides together following attacks on Saudi oil assets that have been blamed on Iran was floated by US President Donald Trump last month at the opening of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. The prime minister apparently is interested in boosting Pakistan’s profile as a peace maker, having made an offer to Trump during a July visit to Washington to mediate between the US and the Taliban.
