PA’s Abbas slams Israel at UN

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday accused Israel of “arrogance” and “aggression” from the podium at the opening of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Topping his list of grievances were pre-election promises by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that Israel would annex West Bank Jewish settlements, the Jordan Valley and the northern shores of the Dead Sea. “What would you do if someone tried… to erase your presence?” he asked delegates. “Hasn’t the time come for the emancipation of the Palestinian people and their freedom from this injustice, oppression and occupation?” He threatened to end all agreements signed with Israel should it go ahead with such moves. He also blasted the Jewish state for its policy on home demolitions and other issues. In addition, Abbas slammed the United States for what he called “extremely aggressive and unlawful measures” that included recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, something he described as a “blatant provocation” to Muslims and Christians alike.
