Palestinians, Israel Police Clash at Damascus Gate for 6th Night

Palestinians and Israel Police officers clashed in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday night over barriers erected to prevent Palestinian worshipers from sitting on the steps of the Damascus Gate following Ramadan prayer services. It was the sixth night of clashes between Palestinians and police.

Police used water cannons and stun grenades, and other riot control methods to subdue the crowd, according to reports. The Haaretz daily reported that the methods were employed even though the crowd was largely non-violent. Other Israeli media reports said rocks and firecrackers were thrown at police.  At least three Palestinians were arrested on Sunday night over the violent protest.

Police have been accused of using excessive force against the protesters.

Religious Zionism party lawmakers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich visited the Damascus Gate on Sunday night to support police and urge them to crack down on the Palestinian protesters, according to reports.
