Probe Results on Tanker Attacks to be Presented Today in Security Council

The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Norway will present to the U.N. Security Council today the results of a joint probe into the tanker attack that occurred off the UAE coast on May 12, Sky News Arabia reported, without providing further details. The attacks targeted two Saudi tankers, a Norwegian tanker and an Emirati vessel just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a sea channel crucial to the global oil trade. No casualties were reported. U.S. intelligence officials and their counterparts in the Gulf have accused Iran of orchestrating the attacks. The Islamic Republic has denied the accusations. Moreover, the Iran-backed, Yemen-based Houthi movement claimed responsibility for recent drone strikes against Saudi Arabia. Following the series of assaults, the U.S. sent an aircraft carrier and strategic bombers to the region. Tehran and Washington have been in a war of words ever since the latter withdrew from the multilateral 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
