Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lebanese President Michel Aoun will discuss the US decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights during a meeting in Moscow on Tuesday. US President Donald Trump, in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, signed a proclamation on Monday at the White House officially recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, deviating from an international consensus. Israel captured the area from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed it in 1981. Syria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Iran all released statements condemning the US decision as a breach of international law and an impediment to peace. Talks during Aoun’s official visit to Moscow are also expected to tackle bilateral relations, developments in the Middle East and efforts to find a solution for the Syrian refugee crisis.
