Qatar Inaugurates First-ever Subway System Ahead of 2022 World Cup

Qatar inaugurated its first-ever subway system in the capital Doha, about three and a half years before the country hosts the 2022 World Cup. The subway’s total estimated cost of $18 billion makes it one of the most expensive and elaborate engineering projects in the Middle East. The Doha Metro network will ultimately consist of a Red Line, Green Line and Golden Line, and include 37 stations. The 40-kilometer-long Red Line will connect Al Wakra Stadium to Lusail Stadium, where World Cup football matches will be played, as well as Hamad International Airport to the city center. The oil-rich Gulf nation launched the initiative in 2013 and hired 41,000 workers to build the subway system, 90 percent of which will run underground.
