Qatar’s Emir Calls for Immediate Cease-fire in Meeting With US Secretary of State

During a critical meeting in Doha with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani emphasized the urgent need for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. The Qatari leader stressed the importance of protecting civilians, ensuring the delivery of adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid, and reducing the current escalation to maintain stability and security in the region, according to a report by Qatar News Agency.

In a later press conference, the Qatari prime minister and foreign minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, discussed the challenges faced in mediating the Israel-Hamas conflict, particularly following the recent killing of a senior Hamas leader. Despite these setbacks, the prime minister reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to continue its mediation efforts. He further expressed concerns over hostile activities in the Red Sea, saying they were direct consequences of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Secretary Blinken, on his part, announced plans to address civilian protection during his subsequent visit to Israel. He emphasized the necessity for Palestinian civilians to safely return to their homes without being compelled to leave Gaza.

Blinken’s visit to Qatar is part of his broader Middle Eastern tour, aimed at de-escalating tensions following the intensified crisis due to the assassination of a senior Hamas figure.
