Report: 4 Afghan Soldiers Killed in US ‘Friendly Fire’ Attack

At least four Afghan military personnel were killed and six were wounded in a “friendly fire” incident the eastern province of Logar on Monday night, provincial police claim. Police spokesman Shahpoor Ahmadzai said that a US airstrike “mistakenly” targeted an Afghan National Army outpost that first came under Taliban attack and called for air support. The outpost is located in the Bazar-e-Zekher area on the outskirts of Pol-e-Alam, about 40 miles south of the capital, Kabul. A US military spokesperson said, “We are aware of reports a US airstrike conducted last night in support of Afghan forces may have resulted in Afghan National Army casualties. US and Afghan forces are working closely together to develop a shared understanding of this event.  A joint investigation is ongoing.” Soon after, at 11 am local time Tuesday, a US military convoy was hit by a suicide attack at a nearby location on the Kabul-Paktia highway. No group has taken responsibility for the attack. A US military spokesperson said the only casualty was the attacker. “A vehicle-borne IED [improvised explosive device] targeted a US convoy this morning in Logar province. Only the VBIED driver was killed. No US or Coalition service members were wounded or killed in the attack. We are investigating the incident,” the spokesperson said.
