Riots Break Out in Sheikh Jarrah Over Right-Wing Lawmaker’s Office

Riots broke out in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah following an announcement by right-wing Israeli lawmaker Itamar Ben Gvir that he will open an office in the disputed neighborhood. The violence broke out late on Saturday and continued into Sunday. At least two people were injured and six arrested early Sunday following clashes between protesters and police. Several people were injured in the violence.

Ben Gvir opened the office on Sunday and a right-wing protest was scheduled to be held on Sunday evening. Ben Gvir’s decision to open an office came after a firebomb attack Friday night on the home of a Jewish family in the predominately Palestinian neighborhood. He has said he will remain in the neighborhood until the Jewish families have around-the-clock protection.

Tension and violence between Jews and Palestinians in the neighborhood is considered to be one of the main catalysts behind the 11-day cross-border conflict between Gaza and Israel in May, which saw rockets fired from Gaza into Jerusalem. Ben Gvir previously opened a temporary office in the neighborhood prior to the attacks. Four Palestinian families are slated to be evicted from the neighborhood by a Jewish-owned company that has title over the property in which they have lived for decades.
