Rocket Attack on US -Led Forces in Northern Iraq Kills Civilian Contractor
A rocket attack on US-led forces in northern Iraq, claimed by a little-known Iran-backed group, left a civilian contractor dead. A US service member and at least five other contractors were injured in the Monday attack, Reuters reported.
The rockets were fired on a military air base at Erbil International Airport. They also landed in nearby residential areas, according to reports.
The group Saraya Awliya al-Dam, or Guardians of Blood, claimed responsibility for the attack, and said it was aimed at the “American occupation” in Iraq. It vowed to carry out more attacks, Al Jazeera reported, citing the SITE Intelligence Group.
“We are outraged by today’s rocket attack,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement.
