Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Republic will not allow itself to be pressured to hold negotiations with Washington. “We will never yield to America’s pressure and we will not negotiate from a position of weakness,” Rouhani said in Tehran during a Sunday news conference. “America’s ‘maximum pressure’ toward Iran is doomed to failure.” US President Donald Trump, who reinstated harsh economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic after withdrawing the US from a 2015 multilateral nuclear accord designed to bar Iran from developing nuclear weapons, has said he’d be willing to negotiate a more restrictive deal that also limits the country’s ballistic missile program. The Iranians so far have refused and have been taking steps since the summer to move away from limitations that the existing accord placed on uranium enrichment. The other signatories – the UK, France, Germany, Russia and China – remain committed to the deal although the Europeans have criticized Iran for these steps.
