Russia Claims It Has Written Guarantees to Sign Iran Nuclear Deal

Russia claims that it has written guarantees that it will be able to continue to do business with Iran despite US and international sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, and thus will not prevent the Iran nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) from going forward.

“We have received written guarantees – they are included in the very text of the agreement on reviving the JCPOA, and in these texts there is a reliable defence of all the projects provided for by the JCPOA and those activities – including the linking up of our companies and specialists,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday.

Lavrov’s comments came during a visit to Moscow by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian. He said during a joint news conference that Russia was not the impediment to Iran signing on to the revitalized nuclear agreement.

Russia, one of the world powers that signed the original 2015 deal, which has been active in the indirect negotiations to bring the US back into the deal that it left in 2018 under former President Donald Trump, last week began demanding guarantees from the United States regarding its right to free and full trade, economic and investment cooperation and military-technical cooperation with Iran before it is willing to sign on to the deal.
