Russia Says 200 Islamic State ‘Terrorists’ Killed in Airstrike in Syria

Russia’s military said on Monday that it killed “up to 200 terrorists” in an airstrike in eastern Syria. The Russian air force struck two Islamic State bases located northeast of Palmyra, The Associated Press reported.

The airstrike also destroyed cars, ammunition and explosives components, the Russian military said. The Islamic State hideouts served as a base for terror attacks across Syria, according to the Russian military, which also said the ISIS fighters were planning attacks to disrupt the upcoming Syrian presidential elections announced on Monday. The date that the Russian airstrike took place is not clear.

Russia entered the military fray of the Syrian civil war in 2015, helping President Bashar Assad regain control over most of the country.
