Saudis, Iranians to Air Conflicting Claims at UN Gathering

Saudi Arabia plans to make its case that Iran was behind a massive September 14 attack on two of its refineries when world leaders convene at the United Nations this week to open the 2019-20 session of the General Assembly. Riyadh says the attack was carried out by Iranian missiles and drones and it is now only a question of determining the exact location of their launch. On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said he’d use the UN gathering not only to convince the world that someone else was behind the attacks, but also to unveil a plan aimed at returning peace and quiet to the Gulf. Tensions in the region are sky-high not only because of the missile and drone strikes on the refineries, but because of other aerial attacks against Saudi Arabia staged by Iran-backed rebels in Yemen, as well as a campaign of harassment and assaults against commercial oil tankers in Gulf waters that is being blamed on Tehran.
