Flights to and from Istanbul Airport remain canceled Tuesday for the second day in a row after Turkey’s most populous city was hit by a major snowstorm. “All flights at Istanbul Airport have been temporarily halted for flight safety due to bad weather conditions,” the airport management announced in a post on Twitter. Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya asked local residents not to travel unless necessary and sent public employees home at 3:30 pm local time on Monday. The Istanbul Governor’s Office also said in a statement that vehicles heading to Istanbul from the Thrace area in the northern part of the country would not be allowed to enter the city. Heavy snowfalls stranded more than 4,600 people on roads around the country, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority.
