The death toll in anti-government protests in Sudan reached seven on Tuesday, with demonstrations outside the Ministry of Defense in Khartoum. It took Sudani security forces two attempts to disperse the protesters. Videos posted on social media include the sounds of heavy gunfire. Sources cited by the Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath news agencies said the shooting most likely came from the ruling party’s special forces, although there have been statements issued by the country’s armed forces to support the citizens in their protests. The demonstrations have been aimed mostly at the high cost of living and shortages of bread and fuel, but are rapidly turning into a direct challenge to the three-decade-long rule of President Omar al-Bashir. Bashir is wanted by an international court for war crimes it says he committed during secession battles in the Darfur region.
