Sudan Reports Over 11 Million Displaced, Promises Aid Amid Conflict

Sudan reported Monday that the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has resulted in over 11 million displaced individuals, a significant portion of whom are women and children. Graham Abdel-Qadir, Sudan’s acting minister of culture and information, revealed that the displaced include 4 million women and 3 million children, with the majority coming from the Khartoum, Gezira, and Darfur regions.

Abdel-Qadir said his government was committed to providing humanitarian assistance to those affected, in ways that ensure respect for the nation’s sovereignty. The ongoing clashes, which began on April 15, 2023, have led to a dire humanitarian situation, with more than 13,000 fatalities reported by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA has expressed deep concern over Sudan’s displacement crisis, which is now considered the largest in the world due to the escalating conflict.
