Sudanese Leader Touts Support for Palestinians after Netanyahu Meeting

Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, insists that nothing has changed in the country’s support for Palestinians and their aspirations for a homeland. Burhan made the comment on Tuesday as he faced withering criticism from within Sudan’s transitional system of governance, as well as from rank and file citizens, for his meeting on Monday in Entebbe, Uganda, with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Since the overthrow of dictator Omar al-Bashir and painful efforts toward military-civilian unity in the lead-up to democratic elections, Sudan has been seeking outside funding and a removal from Washington’s list of countries supporting terrorism, which makes international investments more difficult. Israel is frequently seen as a stepping stone to the US. A spokesman for Sudan’s cabinet said Burhan had kept his colleagues in the dark about the meeting, news of which was leaked in Israel and later confirmed by the office of the politically beleaguered Netanyahu, who is anxious to show Israeli voters the inroads he is making toward ties with Africa and Arab countries as the Jewish state heads for a March 2 election, its third in less than a year.
