Sudan’s Protesters Agree to Draft of Ethiopian-mediated Agreement

Sudan’s opposition said on Saturday it had received, and agreed to, a draft agreement from an Ethiopian mediator delineating the country’s would-be governmental structure for a transitional period. “We demand that the document be approved by the military council to move the situation in Sudan forward,” said Babiker Faisal, a spokesman for the coalition of protest groups. The sovereign council – the remaining sticking point – would be made up of seven civilians and seven members of the military, with one additional seat reserved for an impartial individual, according to a report by Reuters. In May, the parties came to an initial agreement that gave two-thirds of the seats of a transitional legislature to the protesters, and this will reportedly remain the case. Sudan’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) and demonstrators have been at odds following the overthrow of president Omar al-Bashir on April 11, with the activists pressuring the military rulers for a transfer of power to civilian rule.
