Sudan’s TMC Detains 9 Soldiers Following Recent Violence

Nine soldiers from Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were relieved from their duties and detained in connection with recent violence in the cities of Omdurman and Al-Obeid, the country’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) spokesman said on Friday. Lt.-Gen. Shams El Din Kabbashi added that the governor of North Kordofan State and its security council would be held accountable for the killings of four teenagers and an adult during a student protest in Al-Obeid on Monday. At least four protesters were killed and many injured in Omdurman on Thursday, opposition medics said, as hundreds of thousands took to the streets in response to the El-Obeid killings. The TMC and the opposition alliance signed a political accord earlier this month as part of a multi-year power-sharing deal until elections can be held. However, they are still working on a constitutional declaration. The groups have been at loggerheads ever since the overthrow of president Omar al-Bashir in April, and tensions have yet to subside.
