Supreme Leader Says Iran Will Only Return to Nuclear Deal After US Lifts Sanctions
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that, in a “final and irreversible decision,” the Islamic Republic will only return to compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal after the United States lifts all sanctions on his country.
Khamenei made the statement on Sunday during a meeting with Iranian Air Force commanders. He reiterated the United States’ responsibility in a tweet on his official English-language account.
“The side with the right to set conditions to #JCPOA is Iran since it abided by all its commitments, not US or 3 European countries who breached theirs. If they want Iran to return, US must lift all sanctions. We’ll verify & if it’s done properly, we’ll return to our commitments,” he tweeted.
Iran has been progressively breaching the requirements of the deal for the last year, most recently installing advanced centrifuges and enriching uranium to 20% purity. President Joe Biden has said that the US would rejoin the nuclear deal, called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which it left in 2018 under former President Donald Trump, after Iran comes back into compliance.
