Official Syrian media outlets reported on Wednesday that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad fought briefly with troops that Turkey had sent into a 20-mile-wide zone to dislodge Kurdish fighters. The Syrian side gave no further details, but photojournalists documented at least one clash 10 miles east of the Syrian town of Ras al-Ein. Ankara’s October 9 incursion was aimed at driving out both the YPG, a militia of Syrian Kurds, and the Syrian Democratic Forces, a mostly Kurdish roof organization administering the corridor since it was wrested from Islamic State in bitter fighting that ended earlier this year. The Syrian troops entered the corridor after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reached an agreement last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the fighting and allow Syrian and Russian soldiers to oversee the Kurds’ removal.
