Taliban Suicide Car-Bombing in Kabul Kills at Least 14

A suicide car-bombing early Wednesday morning outside of a police station in Afghanistan’s capital killed at least 14 people and injured 145 others, the government said. Four of those killed were policemen whereas the rest of the deceased, along with 92 of the wounded, were civilians, according to the country’s deputy interior minister. The bomb was detonated while the vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint located near the station. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes a day after the terror group called for a boycott of Afghanistan’s September 28 presidential election and threatened to target political rallies. The Taliban is currently engaged in peace talks with the United States – described by Washington’s chief negotiator as the “most crucial” phase of the diplomatic initiative – which are geared toward ending the longest war in American history. US officials estimate an agreement could be forged by August 13, with the major stipulations being the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan in exchange for security guarantees by the Taliban.
