Teachers in Iran Protest Lack of Salary and Pension Reform

Hundreds of teachers marched throughout Iran to protest for changes in their pay and pensions. They are opposed to how new salary and pension reform, including a grading system for teachers based on experience and performance, will be implemented, according to reports. They have also called on the government to work faster to align pensions with the salaries of working teachers.

Protesters on Thursday chanted slogans including: “if embezzlement is reduced, our problems will be solved,” and “we only heard promises, we didn’t see justice,” according to a report from the state broadcaster. Inflation in Iran has risen to close to 60 %, in large part due to economic sanctions imposed in 2018 when the United States left the nuclear agreement with Iran, which Iran has since violated.
