TMC Proclaims Agreement on Three-year Sudanese Transition

Sudan’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) says civilian protest leaders have agreed to a three-year transition period before a new form of governance is introduced to replace the system used during the 30-year-rule of ousted president Omar al-Bashir. Lt.-Gen. Yasser al-Atta, a member of the TMC, told reporters early on Wednesday that during the transition, parliament will be composed of 300 members, two-thirds of whom will be representatives of the protest movement, whose demonstrations, which began over the rising cost of bread, ultimately led to Bashir’s April 11 ouster. The remaining representatives will be from other political groups. The generals initially set a two-year transition period to be run solely by military personnel, but opposition groups wanted four years as well as final say on all matters concerning the transition. There was no immediate word from protest leaders about the reported compromise, but rank-and-file protesters took to the streets to celebrate. Remaining negotiations will focus on the composition of a sovereign council to replace the TMC.
