Tunisian PM-designate Names Proposed Government

Prime Minister-designate Elyes Fakhfakh reached an agreement Wednesday with the moderate Islamist party Ennahda to form a new coalition government. The proposed government is expected to win a vote of confidence in Tunisia’s parliament in the coming few days, heading off the need for another election and ending a crisis that has paralyzed the country’s political scene for four months. President Kais Saied had said earlier this week that if a new government was not formed soon, he would dissolve parliament, sending the country to early elections. Fakhfakh’s proposed government would include the Ennahda, Tahya Tounes, Achaab, Attayar, and El Badil parties, as well as independents. It would see Nourredine Erray, Imed Hazgui, and Nizar Yaich in the key positions of foreign, defense and finance minister, respectively. Fakhfakh has said that any government he forms must be based on the “values of the 2011 revolution” and that he would prioritize tackling the country’s high unemployment and improving public services.
