More than 100 people have been reported killed in western Turkey from Friday’s earthquake, described by the US Geological Survey as reaching a 7.0 magnitude. A vast majority of the 104 deaths occurred in Turkey’s third-most populous city, Izmir. The total also includes two Greek citizens who died on the Greek island of Samos, near to the quake’s epicenter under the eastern Aegean Sea. Officials report that close to 1,000 people were injured by the earthquake. As of today, almost 150 people are being treated for their injuries in local Turkish hospitals. The Turkish disaster and emergency agency AFAD reported that over 3,000 tents and 13,000 beds have been sent to the affected area to provide temporary shelter as the region heads into the winter.
