U.N. Investigator: Evidence MbS Might be Involved in Khashoggi Murder

Agnes Callamard, an expert on extrajudicial executions for the United Nations, says there is evidence that Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman might have been involved in the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, to do a personal errand. A Turkish investigation indicated he was killed and apparently dismembered inside the consulate by what has been described as a hit team sent from Saudi Arabia. The kingdom admits that a number of people have been arrested in the case but insists it was a rogue operation. “It is the conclusion of the Special Rapporteur that Mr. Khashoggi has been the victim of a deliberate, premeditated execution, an extrajudicial killing for which the state of Saudi Arabia is responsible under international human rights law,” Callamard’s report says, adding: “There is credible evidence, warranting further investigation of high-level Saudi officials’ individual liability, including the Crown Prince’s.” The report calls for an international probe into the matter.
