The United Nations says last week’s round of talks in Geneva between officers representing Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) and the insurgent Libyan National Army (LNA) have disbanded without results. The talks were mediated by UN Special Envoy for Libya Ghassan Salame without any face-to-face meetings. Nevertheless, Salame thanked the participants for their “high professional and positive spirit.” The LNA, being led by renegade Libyan general Khalifa Haftar from the eastern city of Benghazi, has been waging an offensive since last April against the UN-backed GNA, which is based in Tripoli. Haftar’s forces have taken a considerable amount of territory, including several cities and numerous oil fields, and have been threatening Tripoli since the summer. Media reports have said that the GNA is demanding that the insurgents withdraw from most, or even all, of the territory they have captured in the offensive, a demand Haftar has turned down.
