[Islamabad] The US Embassy in Islamabad has issued a security advisory for its citizens, warning of credible threats of potential terrorist attacks in the Pakistani capital. The alert comes after reports that the banned group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has threatened the Faisal Mosque, one of the most prominent landmarks in the city.
The advisory follows the circulation of videos by TTP and the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, another banned armed faction, showing their names displayed in the courtyard of Faisal Mosque. The videos have raised security concerns, prompting the US Embassy to take precautionary measures.
As part of its response, the embassy’s Regional Security Office has restricted US employees from visiting the Faisal Mosque area until further notice. The advisory also urges US citizens in Islamabad to take extra precautions, including avoiding large gatherings, being cautious in public places, and leaving any area immediately if they feel unsafe.
The embassy further advises reviewing personal security plans, staying updated through local media, maintaining a low profile, carrying identification, and cooperating with authorities.
Islamabad Police and Pakistan’s Interior Ministry have not yet commented on the US Embassy’s security alert or the specific threats to Faisal Mosque.

Previous US Security Warnings in Pakistan
This is not the first time in recent months the US has issued a security warning in Pakistan. In November 2024, the embassy advised US citizens and diplomatic staff to avoid the Serena Hotel and Peshawar Golf Club due to potential security threats. That warning was based on intelligence indicating the possibility of attacks on locations near sensitive sites in Peshawar.
A Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) official, speaking anonymously, linked the current security alert to intelligence gathered during a recent CTD operation in Punjab, where several individuals connected to a terrorist network were arrested. However, authorities have not disclosed the exact nature of the threat.
Pakistan’s Rising Security Concerns
Pakistan has experienced a surge in terrorist activity in recent years, raising national and international security concerns. TTP, which operates mainly along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, has been responsible for numerous attacks targeting security forces, government installations, and civilians. The group seeks to impose its version of Sharia law and challenge state authority.
The Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, another active armed faction, primarily operates from North Waziristan and has expanded its targets, including high-profile locations such as Faisal Mosque. Security analysts believe that the partial withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan has emboldened such factions, leading to an increase in terrorist attacks.
Pakistan’s security forces continue to face a growing challenge as attacks become more frequent and widespread. Recent incidents have targeted military installations, public spaces, and government officials, further escalating concerns about stability in the region.
Ongoing Response and Future Security Measures
Authorities in Islamabad and across Pakistan are on heightened alert following the latest warning from the US Embassy. While there has been no official response from Pakistani law enforcement, security measures are expected to be tightened in sensitive areas, including Faisal Mosque and other major landmarks.
The coming days will determine whether further actions will be taken to counter the threats posed by TTP and affiliated groups. Meanwhile, US citizens in Pakistan are advised to follow embassy guidance and remain vigilant.
