White House Confirms Osama bin Laden’s Son Killed in Military Op
The White House announced that the son of former al-Qa’ida leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a US counter-terrorism operation somewhere near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. In a statement, the Trump Administration said that Hamza bin Laden’s death “not only deprives al-Qa’ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group.” It added that Hamza “was responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups.” Many analysts viewed the younger bin Laden as an eventual heir to the leadership of al-Qa’ida. US Navy SEALs in 2011 killed Osama during a raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The revelation comes just days after the US marked the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, in which al-Qa’ida terrorists flew hijacked passenger planes into two World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. A fourth aircraft crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after civilians on board attempted to retake the plane.
