Afghanistan to Re-Establish Domestic Flights

The only aircraft you will see in the skies of Afghanistan on domestic runs are those of the coalition forces, and as recent weeks have shown, some of them fail to make it to their final destinations. Indeed, for the past 25 years the skies have been a no-go area for civilian air traffic.

All that is about to change with news that Kabul intends purchasing five small aircraft from China to re-establish domestic flights.

The country currently owns five large aircraft for international journeys, but journeys at home must be made by bus, car, saddle, or on foot.

Bakhter, once the domestic carrier in Afghanistan, is set to take to the skies once again, the country’s Transport Minister Nimatullah Ehsan Jawid told the Afghanistan Times.

The mountainous terrain, together with the ongoing fighting, makes much of Afghanistan a virtual impossibility as a destination for internal travel. Vast areas of the state are simply cut off from others. A domestic flight schedule would ease journeys for many, assuming the aircraft will not be targeted.

Despite the reported wholesale destruction of historical sites by the Taliban, the country remains beautiful, offering tourists thousands of square miles of undisturbed natural beauty. That having been said very few visitors travel to Afghanistan by choice.

One travel note in case you do think of making the journey, you will have to reset your watch on arrival, Afghanistan time is 30 minutes different from that of all its neighbors.
