47 Jordanian MP’s Call to Cancel Peace Treaty with Israel

After Israel’s parliament held a debate on imposing Israeli sovereignty over the Temple Mount, which is holy to Jews and Muslims, 47 Jordanian MPs signed a petition that called for the cancellation of the 1994 peace treaty with Israel, according to the Jordan Times.

The petition criticized the Jordanian government for not taking a “strong and solid stand against the Knesset’s attempts to revisit Jordan’s role as custodian of the Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem.” In the peace treaty, Israel says that Jordan has a “special role” in the custodianship of the holy sites in Jerusalem.

After 1967, Israel annexed the Temple Mount along with all of Jerusalem’s old city, but gave control of the site to the Muslim religious trust called the Waqf. Israel also prohibited Jewish prayer at the site, a rule that has long bothered some Israelis. On Tuesday, right-wing MK Moshe Feiglin called for Jews to be allowed to pray at the site and called on Israel to finally “impose sovereignty” there.
