7 Arrested in February Attack on Israeli Embassy in Mauritania

Seven men described by a presiding judge as ”Salafist jihadists" have been charged in the February attack on the Israeli Embassy in Mauritania. The reference is to an Algerian-based terrorist group that recently began calling itself Al-Qa’ida in Islamic North Africa. The men had been arrested before and released for lack of evidence. The new charges came after prosecutors said they had received new evidence. But the men have not been taken into custody and will be required only to check in at a police station every day. As the only Arab League member that has diplomatic relations with Israel and allows it to have an embassy on its soil, Mauritania comes under frequent criticism from Islamic countries.
