The controversial role some foreign countries played in the war against al-Qaeda terrorism received renewed exposure with the revelation of secret CIA tapes of a Yemeni man’s interrogation in Morocco in 2002. The tapes were found three years ago under a desk at CIA headquarters and were thought to have been destroyed. But now they represent the only video evidence of the CIA’s secret overseas interrogation practice which human rights groups have decried as torture. The tape depicts Ramzi bin al-Shibh, who was captured in Pakistan and is suspected of playing a central role in planning the September 11 attack. The tapes were broadcast on CNN Tuesday. Bin al-Shibh and four other conspirators, including alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, are facing the death penalty for their role in the attack.
