Abbas Again Defends Stipends to Killers’ Families

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday again rose to the defense of the payment of stipends to families of Palestinians killed while trying to kill Israelis. The policy has been condemned world-wide as it angers countries that donate money to support the Palestinian government. The stipends resulted in the Taylor Force law being enacted in the United States, cutting off financial aid to the Palestinians until the stipends end. The $300 million, much of it comprised of donated funds, that is paid out to families of killers and would-be killers, is equivalent to about 7% of the annual budget – an amount donor states find unacceptable. The amount exacerbates resentment among donor states who note the Palestinian warnings that the Palestinian Authority is on the verge of economic collapse.
