Abbas Doubles-Down on Stipends to Killers’ Families at United Nations

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas received cheers from the normally staid audience in the hall of the General Assembly on Thursday when he again reiterated that he has no intention of bowing to international criticism and halt the payment of stipends to families of those who died or are imprisoned because of an act of violence against Israelis and others. Many attacked have been American citizens. Abbas also threatened to cancel all agreements between the PA and Israel if Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu goes ahead with his stated plan to annex the Jordan Valley areas captured in the 1967 war. He chastised the United States for committing “illegal and aggressive acts” including the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and closing the Palestinian’s “embassy” in Washington, D.C. Abbas also accused Netanyahu of not living up to his promise to meet Abbas “anytime, anywhere.” He said the Israeli prime minister refused three calls from Russia relating to mediating between Israel and the Palestinians; and reiterated his call for an international conference on peace between the parties, exhorting the international community to “put an end to Israeli aggression and arrogance.”
