Abbas Meets Putin in Moscow

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, merely days after the latest visit to the Kremlin by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Notably to some, Putin commented that Abbas had used the World Cup matches as the primary reason for the Palestinian’s visit, as if to blunt the impression that Abbas and Putin were solely focused on the political situation back home. Russian news agencies quoted Abbas as telling Putin that, “We are resisting attempts by the Americans to impose their decisions on the most sensitive problems of Palestine.” Netanyahu, who had been in the Kremlin on Wednesday, is a frequent visitor by diplomatic standards, and has been pressing the Russian leader to broker an understanding that would see Iranian forces leave Syria. Nevertheless, it seems more likely that nothing more than a buffer zone – if anything at all – will result. The present situation that sees Iran and its proxy-fighters resting on Israel’s doorstep is a prescription for disaster according to most observers.
