Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is set to unveil what is being called a “major diplomatic initiative” aimed at “ending the Israeli occupation” and establishing the Palestinian state. The Qatari news agency said the plan was discussed in meetings Abbas held in Doha on Friday with Qatari Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and Hamas leader-in-exile Khaled Meshaal, both of whom were said to have signed-off on the Abbas proposal. It is believed that Abbas will ask the United Nations and International Criminal Court at The Hague along with “world powers” to take responsibility for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Abbas was also said to be planning to present his strategy to US Secretary of State John Kerry when he visits the region, and that Abbas expects a less-than-enthusiastic reception from the American. Abbas and his aides believe that with the collapse of Kerry’s peace initiative the era of a one-state sponsored peace plan has ended.
