In a demand that will no doubt cause an uproar in Israel, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud ‘Abbas said in Cairo on Sunday that he would ask for the release of two Palestinian leaders in exchange for the release of captured Israeli soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit. One is Marwan Barghouti, the popular leader of the Tanzim faction of ‘Abbas’ Fatah, who is serving five consecutive life sentences for murder in terrorist attacks. The other, Ahmed Saadat, is believed to be behind the assassination of Israeli tourism minister Rehavam Ze’evi in 2001.
