The killing in Sudan’s Darfur region is becoming more widespread, according to the African Union, which has some 7,000 peacekeepers in the country. The reportedly government-backed Janjaweed Arab fighters are killing and pillaging in Darfur unimpeded by the central government, said an AU officer. Rwandan AU member Maj. Harry Soko made the comment during a briefing for a delegation from the United Nations, headed by High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres. Rape is also a continuing problem. “We are counting on your commitment to improve the security situation in the IDP camps and their surroundings,” Guterres told representatives of Khartoum in Darfur.
