African Union Forces Ramp Up Efforts To Secure Somalia During Ramadan

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on Monday announced its commitment to strengthening security measures throughout Somalia during the holy month of Ramadan, which commenced globally this week. Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the African Union special representative for Somalia, emphasized the importance of collaboration between Somali security forces, ATMIS, and the general public to maintain peace and prevent potential disturbances by al-Shabab terrorists. This initiative aims to protect Somali citizens, especially in light of previous Ramadan periods, during which al-Shabab was known to launch attacks on urban centers, military installations, and crowded public spaces such as hotels, markets, and restaurants. “During this holy month of Ramadan, ATMIS pledges to continue to fulfill its mandate of supporting the Somali Security Forces to ensure the safety and security of the Somali people and their property within our areas of responsibility,” the African Union mission said in a statement issued in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital.
