Ahead of COP26, Bennett announces Israel’s Goal of Zero Emissions by 2050

Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Energy Minister Karine Elharrar announced that Israel will set a goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The announcement on Friday came ahead of the United Nations climate conference, known as the COP26, opening in Glasgow on Sunday. Nearly 200 countries will meet at the two-week conference. Israel’s delegation includes 120 representatives from government ministries and the Knesset, civil society, academia, the business sector, and local government. Bennett will travel with the delegation and remain at the conference for the first two days. “The climate crisis affects all of our lives, including that of our children and grandchildren. It affects our lives; therefore, we must be fully determined. Israel is the innovation nation and has the ability to contribute to the world the talents and creativity that only we have,” Bennett said in announcing the zero emissions goal. “With the new goal, Israel is lining up alongside the developed countries that are already taking action to attain the goal of zero emissions, and is redoubling its commitment to the Paris agreement and the international agreements on the issue. We are responding to the global challenge, finding technological solutions and joining in to achieve this important goal,” he added. Most of the developed countries, which are responsible for 70% of global emissions, have already declared that by 2050 they will achieve zero emissions. Among these are the US, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Ireland and Ethiopia, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
