Ahmadi Nejad to Run for Re-election

After months of rumors about the political future of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad, his spokesman told The Washington Post he would be seeking re-election in June’s nationwide vote. There had been speculation that the incumbent would step down for a variety of reasons, including poor health, unpopularity with many voters and reported disagreements with the country’s religious leadership. The election is expected to be hotly contested with several well-known and highly respected candidates running for the top political job in the country. However, its political power is extremely limited. Analysts suggest only 10 percent of national power is vested in the presidency, with the remainder in the realm of the unelected spiritual leaders.
