The network of tunnels that have served as the conduit for smuggling contraband, weapons and terrorists from Egypt into the Gaza Strip has been a primary target of Israel’s air force since the Gaza operation began on Saturday. Estimates of the number of tunnels ranges into the hundreds. Israel’s army has been gathering information on the tunnels for some time, and prior to the onset of the operation coordinated with Egypt so that none of its soldiers or border guards would be injured. The air force used precision bombs to destroy at least 40 tunnels in the first hours of the campaign.
