Airbnb To Boycott Jewish Communities In West Bank

Airbnb has caved to pressure from the boycott, divestment, sanctions (BDS) movement, announcing plans to ban rental listings offered by residents of Jewish communities located in the West Bank. In response, Israeli lawmakers hammered the decision, urging people to take legal action against the company and threatening to limit its operations throughout the country. For his part, Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan said he would discuss with senior U.S. officials whether the move violates American laws that prohibit boycotts of Israel. “National conflicts exist all over the world,” Erdan asserted, “[so Airbnb] will have to explain why they specifically, and uniquely, chose to implement this political and discriminatory decision in the case of citizens of the State of Israel.” By contrast, chief Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat welcomed the initiative and reiterated Ramallah’s call for the “United Nations Human Rights Council to release [an existing] database of companies profiting from the Israeli colonial occupation.”
