Al-Qa’ida Infiltration Becomes Issue in Lebanon

Lebanon’s president on Sunday responded to an earlier warning by the defense minister that Al-Qa’ida terrorists have infiltrated into the country from the northern village of Arsal under the pretense of being refugees from Syria. After meeting with the Maronite Patriarch, President Michel Sleiman told reporters that Lebanon will not tolerate terrorists and that towns such as Arsal are cooperating with the state on the matter. Last week, Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn charged that Al-Qa’ida is trying to establish a base in Lebanon. Also last week, suicide bombings in Damascus that killed more than 40 people was attributed to the international terror group. On Friday, the head of the Syrian-Iranian proxy Hizbullah charged that the United States was behind the bombings.
