Aleppo Takes Brunt of Fighting; 160 Killed on Saturday

Intense fighting in the city of Aleppo continued into its third day on Sunday – one day after observers reported single-day death toll of 160. Rebel forces launched a major offensive in Aleppo on Friday, trying again to drive President Al-Assad’s troops from the city, which has seen control teeter-totter back-and-forth between government and rebel forces for months. The commercial center of Aleppo was the primary battlefield for Sunday’s fighting. Reports from the scene fear the total destruction of the famous medieval markets after a number of shops were said to have been destroyed by fire. The commercial hub is a UNESCO world heritage site. Fighting the fires is nearly impossible because the city’s water supply has been cut-off by the government forces and those seeking to save the structures are using hand-held fire extinguishers.
