Algeria Begins 3rd Agricultural Census To Bolster Food Security

Algeria launched its third general agricultural census on Sunday, a crucial initiative to enhance the country’s food security through improved agricultural policies, according to an agricultural official. Agriculture Ministry Secretary General Hamid Bensaad announced that the census will continue until July 17.

A total of 7,449 enumerators, controllers, and supervisors have been mobilized to conduct the census and compile a comprehensive report on agricultural operations across Algeria, reported the official APS news agency. This data collection effort aims to provide valuable insights for various stakeholders, including government administrations, economic operators, the scientific community, and international organizations focused on sustainable development goals.

The census marks Algeria’s third national agricultural survey, following previous censuses conducted in 1973 and 2001. The agricultural sector is significant for the country, contributing 11.6% to Algeria’s gross domestic product in 2022, according to the World Bank.

The information gathered from the census will be instrumental in shaping future agricultural strategies and policies to ensure sustainable development and food security. The comprehensive report generated will serve as a key reference for all involved parties, helping to guide decision-making processes and policy implementation.
